5. The church wears Israel's titles because it is Israel's continuation

From Sovereign Grace and the Scope of Election: A Comparative Examination of Attainment Theology and Grace Theology, with Particular Attention to the Question of Whether God's Elect Are Found Among All Nations and Religions

Peter, writing to scattered believers in Gentile Asia Minor, lifts Israel's coronation language from Exodus 19:5-6 and sets it on the church without apology: "ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people... which in time past were not a people, but are now the people of God" (1 Peter 2:9-10), quoting Hosea's "not my people" prophecy, exactly as Paul quotes it of Gentile calling (Romans 9:24-26). Jesus announced the transfer in the temple itself: "The kingdom of God shall be taken from you, and given to a nation bringing forth the fruits thereof" (Matthew 21:43). James, at the first church council, declares that the rebuilding of "the tabernacle of David" is fulfilled in the calling of the Gentiles (Acts 15:14-17, quoting Amos 9). And the New Jerusalem's gates bear the names of the twelve tribes while its foundations bear the names of the twelve apostles (Revelation 21:12-14), one city, one people, Old and New Testament elect fused into a single bride. There are not two brides.
